How To Find The Right Colors For A Website

When a web designer works on a project, it’s always very difficult to decide on a color scheme which will work best for this particular project. Usually the product or service determines the main color or only one of them, how to choose the others?  And since colors on the main page play a very important role in user experience, color scheme may be the toughest question. Nevertheless, there are a lot of resources and tools over the Internet which can help you to learn more about Color Theory.

When deciding on a color scheme, do not forget there are psychological effects behind each color and tone. For example, green is associated with wealth, red with energy and blue with sense of trust and security. One of the most effective ways to excite somebody is to project a red hue color onto the walls of their room. It’s been done before by scientists and they came with a clear conclusion.

Today I want to show you examples of websites that are using right combinations of colors that match perfectly. In case you are interested, here are some online tools to help you choose the right scheme:  COLOURLovers, Kuler Adobe, Color Scheme Designer (the links are clickable). And remember that although there are basic rules, every person’s reaction for colors is different.

Websites with Outstanding or Unusual Color Schemes

Each featured site has a color palette of 5 colors below the screenshot. These palettes are simply an idea of the colors used in the design, and there are a couple of points to be taken into consideration about them:

  • The colors have been sourced from the screenshot in Photoshop, so they are for guidance only
  • Some colors included in some of the palettes are not visible on the screenshot page – but they will appear somewhere on the site
